Todd: So Alan you must be happy. You have hockey again in Canada. Alan: Yes, I was quite happy to that the NHLs come to an agreement with the players. And therell be hockey again starting in October. Todd: Ok now as a fan of hockey or just a sports fan in general, do you think that the athletes are making too much money, that its ok for them to strike and ask for more money? Alan: Yes I do think the athletes are making too much money. And I actually agree with the idea of having a salary cap, because I think it makes it more fair for all the teams in the league. Not just the big market teams that make a lot of money, but all the teams have a fair chance at the best players. Todd: Ok, can you just explain exactly what is a salary cap? Alan: Salary cap is the amount of money that a team is allowed to spend for their players. So, if you have a salary cap of 35 million dollars, the team is only allowed to spend that much total for all their players salaries. Todd: Oh I see. Alan: They cannot go over that. Todd: What is the reason that you would have a salary cap? Whats the argument behind it? Alan: So teams that have more money than other teams cant just buy all the good players and leave the less talented players for the smaller market teams. So theres more chance for the smaller market teams to compete with the large market teams for the good players. Todd: So do you think that hockey now is doing well, and that you will not have a strike for a long time to come? Alan: Yes I think after this one there wont be another strike or lock-out for many years. Actually I think this deal is a 10-year deal. I think I its a 10-year deal, so there wont be one for at least 10 years, or longer hopefully. Todd: Well Im glad you have hockey again. Alan: Thank you. 译文属 /201501/35377548 At the local bar第48课 在当地酒吧In America, pubs are usually called ;bars. B: How are you tonight, sir?酒保:您今晚好吗,先生?P: Oh, not too bad. Todd: So Greg in the last one we were talking about minimum wage, and this is one of the topics in your book and its about income disparity. One of the chapters is about income disparity. Now the opposite would be should there the a salary cap, which would mean that basically you could only earn so much, like lets say you can only earn five million dollars, ten million dollars. Nobody could earn more than that. What do you think about that concept? Greg: I personally agree with a salary cap. Im not sure how much it should be, but definitely the discrepancy in wages is way to great. Theres too many people who have to ... a husband and a wife work hard forty hours or more, both of them. Theyre barely, barely getting by, and then you got all these other people who are just buying Rolls-Royce cars and Mercedes, and country clubs and its just not fair. Todd: But, well, for one, though I mean, Mercedes and Rolls-Royce and those are products that provide jobs, so I would argue with that. Actually, as you can probably tell, Im against the idea mainly because, you know, I think that hurts innovation. You know, you look at people like the CEO of a very powerful internet company or software company, and you know, take google for example, Im sure that they make more than ten million, but theyre service is used so much around the world, that they should get that money, and if people couldnt ... hang on ... if people couldnt get ... couldnt earn that salary then maybe they wouldnt have the same motivation and drive to be successful and that people would lose out as a result. Greg: I think that theres not proof to say that these people are making these products because theyre making such tremendous amounts of money. What came first: the product and then they got the money in most cases. Theres ... these people could be ... society can have all sorts of wonderful products and still have a fair income system, and I have nothing against people becoming rich or making a good salary, a very good salary, but not such an incredible gap. You have executives of some major international corporations that are making more money than millions of people in the world make combined. The opposite side of not having a cap is that you have people who are making too little, and those people are also working hard. Those people deserve validation. Those people deserve a good life standard which millions of people across the world are not having. Todd: Well, I think ... well, I agree with you about that. I agree with you about that. That theres people who work hard and that theyre under compensated, but ... and theyre a lot of people that get grossly overpaid but I think thats just a problem of management and that in some cases so people do deserve millions and millions, perhaps billions of dollars if they have really contributed to the product or the outcome. So, basically were gonna disagree on this one. Greg: Yeah. (Yes) Italy has many favorite cities. Can you talk a little bit about them? Marion: Sure, well the first city I lived in was Genoa. And Genoa is on the Riviera, so its a very beautiful place. Its a port city, so my apartment was actually looking out over the port, so I had a great apartment. It was a great view. Genoa has a very old center, so the buildings are hundreds and hundreds of years old obviously but its quite dirty, well I dont really want to say dirty, but its not very well looked after, the historical center, which is a pity but it does have really a lot of character. I really liked it. Todd: So what other cities have you been to? Marion: Well, Ive been to Rome of course. Ive been to Rome a few times. I think its one of my favorite cities actually. I love the fact that in Rome, you walk out of your hotel, or wherever youre staying and youre just surrounded by history, by this amazing, you know, the Coliseum for example. Actually the first time I ever arrived in Italy, I came from the airport directly to the Coliseum station and I walked out the door of that metro station and there was the Coliseum in front of me. It was one of those moments. It was ;Ah, my God!; and there was a full moon up to the left of the coliseum. It was like, almost too perfect, too good to be true. Todd: Ah, did you get a chance to go to Venice? Marion: Yes, I did. Actually, I went to Venice several times. The first time I went was great. We had a chance to travel around, or walk around, and see the city for ourselves. Its really amazing, you know all these bridges, and if you want to get anywhere you have to hop on a boat, and the second time I went though, it was for Carnival, Carnivale, that was amazing thing, so everybody is dressed up in their costumes, and the costumes are really, really elaborate actually and people were having their faces painted, that kind of thing, and everybody was in really good spirits, you know. It was a great occasion. Todd: Sounds fun. And lastly did you get a chance to go to Florence? Marion: Yes, I did actually. I went often because I lived an hour away in Pisa, and so Florence is amazing, its just maybe the most cultural city after Rome as regards art galleries and that kind of thing and just the city itself. Its all that kind of Terra Cotta hues of the buildings, you know, and big piazzas, lots of statues and it has a bit of a rich feel to it actually, so, yeah. Its a really good place to people watch as well. Todd: And Milan, did you get a chance to go to Milan? Marion: Yeah, I stayed with a friend in Milan actually for a couple of weeks. Just a few years ago, even though I had passed through before, I didnt really like it because its a big built up city, lots of smog and pollution, but when I stayed there with my friend and got to know it a bit better, I ended up quite liking it. Todd: Ok, well, lastly, real quickly, if somebody was going to Italy, and there was only one city they could see, what would you recommend? Marion: It would Rome, absolutely. Yeah. Todd: OK. Thanks a lot Marion. Marion: Youre welcome.
