One thinks of nature as “red in tooth and claw,” as the oldsaying goes. Species compete with each other for resources, and members of the same species compete with each other formates. Theres a lot of scratching and biting going on. People love butterflies for their gentleness. And according tonew studies, that soft, fluttery quality persists all the way downto butterfly battles. Yes, male butterflies compete for the attentions of female butterflies. In fact, some males compete by fluttering. Researcher Darrel Kemp, who is now at Arizona State University in Tempe, worked on an Australianbutterfly called Hypolimnas bolina. As is the case with many species, the male Hypolimnas bolinas seek to mate with as many femalesas possible, but the females only mate once. That means at any given time the vast majority offemales arent in a sexually accommodating state, and the males have to duke it out for the few who are. How do they battle? Locking horns? Beating their chests? 捶胸?No. They flutter around in a circle. The two competing males never even come in contact, but at a certain point one of them acceptsdefeat and sails away; while to the victor belongs to the spoilers. What decides winner and loser in a butterfly battle? It isnt clear yet. Kemp has studied all kind of parameters, from body size to wing sp.克姆普参考了各项参数,从蝴蝶体型到翼展。The only consistent factor he found was age. Older butterflies-by old we mean almost threemonths-win out over younger ones. Maybe the kids just dont have what it takes for a hard-core flutter-off. There are many endurings mysteries about the great barrier reef, particularly at night, but this is one of the more enchanting ones. Watch this. This coral is fluorescing under ultraviolet light, its this amazing light show, and it covers pretty much the whole of the reef crest. Look at this, vivid, vivid colors,it doesnt look real,it looks like some bizarre, sort of is what it looks like. One theory is that this magical colors are in some way caused by the corals sunscreen. But dispite lots of very clever people looking into it,no one really knows why this happens. And the same goes for much of the night time activities here.

He cannot quite fathom why his combat uniform is different from that of other American servicemen in the field, depending on whether they are members of the army, the air force or the marines. And soon it may be different no longer; for after years of ludicrously expensive design rivalry, the defence appropriation for 2014 prohibits the services from designing new uniforms, unless they will be used by all members of the armed forces. Remarkably, the Department of Defence has no single department dedicated to researching, developing and procuring the best uniforms for all troops. This caused no problems before 2002, when nearly every serviceman had a choice between a greenish camouflage uniform or a “coffee stain” desert pattern. But over the past 12 years the services have each created their own style of camouflage. The effect has been both costly, and occasionally embarrassing. The marines led the way in 2002 with a versatile and effective new combat uniform, which also served to boost corps morale because the marine insignia was embedded in the design. This inspired a cascade of one-upsmanship among the other services. The air force, for instance, spent several years and more than m designing a new “tiger-stripe” uniform that proved unsuitable for combat—the camouflage was ineffective, the trousers were uncomfortable and the fabric was too heavy, leading to “heat build-up”. The navy spent a lot less money developing the “aquaflage” uniform; but that is a silly blue ensemble that works best where sailors may least wish to blend, in the water. The worst offender has been the army. The service spent years and about .2m developing its own “universal” camouflage. This pattern was designed to work anywhere, but proved useless nearly everywhere. Soon after it was introduced in 2005, soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan began complaining that the pattern turned them into targets. Troops from Syria and China were clearly better equipped. Reports suggest that a high-ranking military official had chosen the pattern without consulting the data from years of studies. The army is said to have spent at least billion on uniforms and equipment printed in this camouflage, which is still in use. In an emergency measure, the army kitted out soldiers in Afghanistan in a new pattern starting in 2010, spending more than .8m on replacement gear in fiscal 2010 and 2011. Part of the problem, explains Timothy ONeill, a retired lieutenant-colonel and camouflage expert, is that officers can be a bit too preoccupied with a uniforms “CDI [chicks dig it] factor”. This vanity, together with bungled trials, missteps and a lack of co-operation, put the cost of developing these uniforms at more than m, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in 2012. This does not include the extra costs—which the GAO estimates in the tens of millions of dollars—of managing the stock and supply of so many different combat uniforms. Nor does it include the high costs of replacing ineffective camouflage in the field. The armed forces spent around 0m on camouflage uniforms in 2011 alone. Stunned by these price tags, Congress in 2010 directed the Department of Defence to raise standards and cut costs. But little has been done. Many soldiers see the wisdom of returning to a shared uniform. But not the marines, who will stick to their pattern “like a hobo on a ham sandwich”, in the words of General James Amos, commandant of the marine corps. It is unclear what all this means for the army, which has been spending millions of dollars testing different patterns for a new camouflage since 2010. It recently started tests for possible new uniforms, which will continue until the end of September. Replacing the services flawed camouflage and equipment could cost another billion over five years, according to the GAO. “Research and development in government is always a long and painstaking process,“ says Mr ONeill. “But if it were easy, then the government would waste even more money, and faster.”

Still less than a year out of its historic bankruptcy, Detroits successes and failures continue to make headlines. The city may have shed most of its debt, but it continues to lose population – down more than 60% of its 1950 population of 1.8 million.Take that shrinking population and couple it with Mayor Mike Duggans ongoing push to tear down blighted buildings, and you get a lot of empty land.Bill McGraws latest story for Bridge Magazine looks at Mayor Duggans blueprint for redesigning Detroit.McGraw tells us that the citys rise in vacant land is directly linked to its drastically shrinking population.;Even in the last census period from 2000 to 2010 the city lost a quarter of its population,; he says, adding that we wont really know how things have changed in the last five years until the next census is completed.According to McGraw, 23 of Detroits 140 square miles are now vacant land. The vacant land is scattered throughout the city, but when combined, thats as much as the land surface area of Manhattan, ;and theres more all the time.;;One of the things Mayor Duggan is doing is hes tearing down houses at a faster rate than any previous mayor,; McGraw tells us.City planners and mayors have historically seen vacant land as a bad sign, but Detroits looking at it differently.Under the citys new planning director Maurice Cox, ;They have decided that vacant land can be productive, and it can be used in a number of different ways,; McGraw says. Those include using vacant land for parks and other recreation spaces, as well as developing ;so-called blue and green infrastructure,; according to McGraw. As an example of the latter, he tells us that its much cheaper to turn the vacant land into receptacles for storm water, rather than deal with the effects of letting it run into the sewer system and causing it to overflow into the Detroit River. He adds that simply taking the vacant land and making it look nice and rural can go a long way toward improving the quality of life for residents.Further, McGraw tells us theres an increasing movement by both the city and its citizens to convert vacant lots into productive agricultural zones. It all boils down to the citys acceptance of the fact that with its smaller population, it cant afford to put more buildings on that land.Instead of seeing so much vacant land as a symbol of failure, theyre moving forward and finding constructive and productive ways to make use of it.Bill McGraws story, Redesigning Detroit: Mayor Mike Duggans blueprint unveiled can be found at bridgemi.com and also at MLive.com.201508/394029 重庆看男科医院哪家比较好云阳奉节巫山县男性专科
