Even though she has lived in Beijing for several years, Chinese men are still a closed book to Cathie Watson. The 27-year-old from the UK says she is unable to the signs - or rather, the lack of signs - given off by Chinese men. “Quiet”, “hard to reach out to” and “shy” are the words Watson uses as she tries to describe them to China Daily. In a country that is integrating with the world in dimensions across the spectrum, cross-cultural relationships have become more common. However, different dating cultures, communication norms and personalities forged in various social contexts pose both challenges and opportunities for young people involved romantically with someone from another country. Hu Yiqiang, 31, a Beijing-based online shop owner, has set his heart on finding a non-Chinese wife or partner, mainly because he is frustrated at the demands made by some Chinese women - a big apartment, a nice car and a good job are the usual requirements cited by Chinese dates, Hu says. But according to women from abroad, Chinese men are not easy to hang out with, either. Alicia Feng, 26, who works for a law firm, recently arrived in China from the US and has found that people are very different from her peers back in California. “Men here just appear more introverted,” she says.26岁的艾丽西娅#8226;冯在一家律师事务所工作,最近刚刚从美国来到中国的她发现,中国人和自己以前在加州的朋友完全不同。 Andrea Bacon, 29, who works as a foreign expert in a meteorological lab, came to Beijing more than 18 months ago with her Chinese boyfriend, whom she met in the US. According to her, Chinese men are very considerate and pay attention to every detail, which she thinks is very touching.29岁的安德烈亚#8226;培根是一所气象实验室的外国专家,一年半之前,她随中国男友来到北京,他们二人是在美国相遇的。 “Obviously, Beijing is quite a strange place for me and at the beginning he tried to accompany me to many multicultural events so I could mingle in a familiar environment. I thought that was very sweet,” Bacon says.“显然,北京对我来说是一个完全陌生的城市。 However, Bacon also admits that her boyfriend’s attitude is very Chinese and the problems that face all young people in the big city, such as buying an apartment, weigh heavily on him. “He always seems to be under some sort of pressure, but I care more about how well we get along with each other,” Bacon says. Bridging the dating gap For Roy Huggins, who has provided long-term counseling for many interracial couples in the US and other countries since 2010, overcoming cultural differences is crucial to ensuring the longevity of a relationship. “Based on academic studies and my experience with clients from Japan, Southeast Asia, and a few from China, being from a collectivist culture, Chinese partners are likely to clash with American or other Western partners about responsibility to family and helping each other meet individual needs,” he says. “For example, a Chinese partner may think less of an American or Canadian partner who seems ‘needy’.”“结合学术研究,以及我与日本、东南亚及中国客户打交道的经验来看,受集体主义文化熏陶的中国人在家庭责任、满足彼此需求等方面的观念往往与美国或其他西方人截然相反,”他说。 In a recent article It’s Hard to Say “I Love You” in Chinese, on China File online magazine, Roseann Lake, a China-based writer from the US, discovered that Chinese men find it very hard to cross the boundary into uncharted territory and express their love in a straightforward, direct way, even though they may be intensely in love with their partner or spouse. /201408/317563One homeowner is resorting to bartering for the latest iPhone as a tactic to sell abeleaguered property in Detroit. The owner has dropped the asking price on a three-bedroom home in east Detroit from ,000 to a new iPhone 6 as the owner is desperate to sell ahead of the area’s tax auction season where ;thousands; of homes near foreclosure will flood the market, real estate broker Larry Else told A News. ;This house is really not worth much at all,; Else said. The windows are broken and there is no front door. The broker himself has not been inside the home because his company has a policy of not going in unsecured houses alone. Detroit#39;s declining fortunes have been precipitous, with an exodus has that left its population about a third of what it used to be in its heyday, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. ;It#39;s a little dicey,; Else said of the neighborhood. Now, the property has accrued more than ,000 in back taxes and will enter foreclosure next year if that debt is not settled. So while the owner is asking for an iPhone 6 -- or, he said he would also accept a 32GB iPad -- the true cost of the sale comes from the buyer assuming the cost of the back taxes. Else said that because he is selling the property as a quick claim deed, it would be up to the buyer to arrange either a payment plan or lump sum payment with county officials to settle the back taxes. That isn#39;t deterring the new-found interest in the property, as Else said that he received four offers today alone, ranging in seriousness. One woman said she was ;interested in the house for the wood,; Else said, explaining that the prospective buyer is apparently on a quest for white pine planks. Another bidder said that they would be willing to hand over an iPhone 5, and another offered 0 for the property, Else said. Else hinted that the most likely buyer is someone who aly lives on the block and put in a 0 bid, but their familiarity with the area appeared to put them at the head of the pack. Else said that the area is ;full of similar houses. He said he expects one of the four offers to work out, and may even finalize the sale tonight. This is not the end of his bartering business, however, as Else said that he#39;s aly gotten another call from a homeowner who has had trouble selling their property. ;I did get a call from a seller today who said #39;We#39;ve been having a hard time selling our house. We have it listed for ,000. Could I get a 1994 Chevy for this house?#39;; Else said.“我确实又接到了一个电话,那名房主说‘我们的房子也很难卖,标价是2万美元。 /201410/3388151. You Complain A Lot你总是抱怨If you’re constantly complaining about your job, lack of money, or unfair life, people won’t care to spend a lot of time with you. Complaining gets old fast. Try to develop a more positive attitude and look for more interesting topics to discuss rather than what’s going wrong in your life. SPAIN // In Andalucía, where whitewashed villages are as common as sherry and jamon, Júzcar stands out--literally. But its brightly colored blue architecture isn#39;t indigenous. It#39;s the result of a marketing ploy; the town hosted the 2011 premiere of #39;The Smurfs.#39; Today, tens of thousands of visitors flock here to experience these Moorish houses in their azure glory. For purists, the original terra-cotta roofs will be a welcome relief. MOROCCO// Like most popular Moroccan destinations, Chefchaouen has monumental mosques, traditional tea shops and a bustling medina. But while color in most cities is limited to the bazaar, Chefchaouen is awash in it. During the last century, the city#39;s buildings were increasingly accented in vibrant blue--both as a cooling mechanism and as an act of spirituality by its once large Jewish population, for whom sky blue was a sacred color. NORWAY // The country#39;s second-largest city may be best-known for its nearby fjords and glaciers, but Bergen is rich in culture and architecture. The latter is thanks to the German merchants of the Hanseatic League, who crowded Bergen#39;s wharf with colorful wooden warehouses, which today comprise one of Norway#39;s seven Unesco World Heritage Sites. Once filled with cod, they now house restaurants, shops and the Hanseatic Museum. /201310/260656

NEW DELHI — B. K. S. Iyengar, who helped introduce the practice of yoga to a Western world awakening to the notion of an inner life, died on Wednesday in the southern Indian city of Pune. He was 95. The cause was heart failure, said Abhijata Sridhar-Iyengar, his granddaughter. After surviving tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria as a child, Mr. Iyengar credited yoga with saving his life. He spent his midteens demonstrating “the most impressive and bewildering” positions in the court of the Maharaja of Mysore, he later recalled. A meeting in 1952 with the violinist Yehudi Menuhin, an early yoga devotee, proved to be a turning point, and Mr. Iyengar began traveling with Mr. Menuhin, eventually opening institutes on six continents.1952年,他与早期瑜伽爱好者耶胡迪·梅纽因(Yehudi Menuhin)会面,这成了他人生的转折点,他开始随同梅纽因旅行,最终在六大洲都开办了学校。Among his devotees were the novelist Aldous Huxley, the actress Annette Bening and the designer Donna Karan, as well as a who’s who of prominent Indian figures, including the cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and the Bollywood siren Kareena Kapoor. He famously taught Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, 85 at the time, to stand on her head. In a 2005 book, “Light on Life,” Mr. Iyengar mused about the vast changes he had seen. “I set off in yoga 70 years ago when ridicule, rejection and outright condemnation were the lot of a seeker through yoga even in its native land of India,” he wrote. “Indeed, if I had become a sadhu, a mendicant holy man, wandering the great trunk roads of British India, begging bowl in hand, I would have met with less derision and won more respect.”“70年前我开始练习瑜伽的时候,嘲笑、排斥和公然谴责就是瑜伽修习者要面对的命运,甚至在印度本土也是如此,”他写道。 The news about Mr. Iyengar — or “guru-ji,” as many here called him, using a Sanskrit honorific — rippled through India on Wednesday morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that he was “deeply saddened” by Mr. Iyengar’s death and offered “condolences to his followers all over the world.” Mr. Iyengar’s practice is characterized by long asanas, or postures, that require extraordinary will and discipline. A reporter who watched daily practice in 2002, when Mr. Iyengar was 83, said that he held one headstand for six minutes, swiveling his legs to the right and the left, and that when he finished, “his shoulder-length hair was awry, he seemed physically depleted,” but he wore the smile of a gleeful child. Ms. Sridhar-Iyengar said her grandfather recognized early on that yoga, up until then viewed as a mystical pursuit, “had something for everybody, not just the intellectually or spiritually inclined.” “He felt satisfied,” she said. “Even at the end, even a few weeks before, he said, ‘I’m satisfied with what I’ve done.’ He took yoga to the world. Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar was born on Dec. 14, 1918, into a poor family in the southern state of Karnataka. The 11th of 13 children, he was born in the midst of an influenza outbreak. Three of his siblings died before reaching adulthood, and he watched his father, a teacher, die of appendicitis when he was 9 years old. Mr. Iyengar himself contracted tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria; by the time he began studying yoga, at 16, he was painfully frail. “My arms were thin, my legs were spindly, and my stomach protruded in an ungainly manner,” he wrote. “My head used to hang down, and I had to lift it with great effort.”“我细胳膊细腿,肚子难看地鼓起,头总是低着,要抬起来得费很大力气,”他写道。His first teacher was his brother-in-law, a Brahmin scholar who had set up a school of yoga at the Jaganmohan Palace, and who sometimes denied his student food if his performance was deemed inadequate. Mr. Iyengar, then a teenager, was the youngest member of the Maharaja of Mysore’s entourage, and was asked to demonstrate his ability to stretch and bend his body for visiting dignitaries and guests. Mr. Menuhin, who visited India in 1952, heard of his practice and penciled him in for a five-minute meeting, and was so instantly impressed that the session went on for more than three hours. Mr. Iyengar recalled, in an interview with CNN, that “the moment I adjusted him and took him, he said, ‘I’ve never felt this sense of joy, elation.’ The violinist later brought Mr. Iyengar to Switzerland, where he introduced him to other prominent Westerners who became his followers. In his first visit to New York in 1956, Mr. Iyengar said he encountered little interest in yoga. It was not until the next decade that he began to attract crowds. “We were just coming out of the ’60s change-your-consciousness thing, and many of us were in our heads, and wanting to meditate, and reach Samadhi,” or enlightenment, Patricia Walden, a longtime student of Mr. Iyengar’s, said in an interview in 2000. “Iyengar was, like, ‘Stand on your feet. Feel your feet.’ He was so practical. His famous e was, ‘How can you know God if you don’t know your big toe?’ 他的名言是‘如果你连自己的大脚趾都不了解,又怎能去了解上帝?’”Were it not for his celebrity in the West, Mr. Iyengar would hardly have gained a reputation in India, said Latha Satish, who heads a major yoga institute in the southern city of Chennai. “He was at the right time at the right place; he would not have survived here,” Mr. Satish said. In India, he said, “everybody was interested in Western education; yoga was not so popular.” Mr. Iyengar’s trademark improvisations — like the use of blocks, blankets and straps to assist in holding difficult postures — were adopted “because of the need of students abroad,” he said.“他出现在正确的时间与正确的地点;他本来无法坚持到这个时候,”萨蒂什说。 Mr. Iyengar’s survivors include a son, Prashant; five daughters, Geeta, Vinita, Suchita, Sunita and Savitha; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Past students recalled Mr. Iyengar as warm and charismatic, but also strict. Elizabeth Kadetsky, who wrote a memoir of the year she spent studying with him, recalled that she was standing on her head in a class when he “took his fingers and shoved them in my upper back, and bellowed, ‘In the headstand, this portion of the back is not straight.’ As his influence sp, she said, he was fiercely competitive with other leading yoga gurus, and would get cranky when asked about their methods. “He demanded loyalty,” she said. “One had to be 100 percent with him.”“他需要忠诚,”她说,“别人必须全心全意地对他。”By the time he reached his 80s, Mr. Iyengar had become accustomed to the kind of reception usually reserved for pop stars. As power yoga became a multimillion-dollar industry, he occasionally cringed at the commercialization of the practice, and wondered whether it would survive its own popularity. But the pleasure he took in the practice was unaffected. At the end of a session in 2002, he lay on his back, knees bent so that his calves were beneath his thighs, arms out to either side, weights holding him down. He lay still for 12 minutes, perfectly immobile except for the twitch of a pinkie. Asked what he was thinking, he replied, “Nothing.”2002年,在一次课程即将结束时,他平躺着,弯曲膝盖,让小腿肚处于大腿下方,伸开双臂,重心放低。 “I can remain thoughtfully thoughtless,” he said. “It is not an empty mind.”“我可以保持有思的无思,”他说,“这并不是头脑空空。” /201408/323004
