Watches often have special value to people, for sentimental reasons or practical interests. With a watch like the Samsung Galaxy Gear -- somewhat utilitarian and probably only perceived as fashionable at a tech convention -- I found it was hard to get attached to it. I#39;ve been testing the Gear, a new #39;smart#39; watch that connects via Bluetooth to a Samsung mobile device and shows you notifications. It showed me calendar reminders and text messages, and told me when I had new email. And since the Gear has a microphone and speaker, you can even make phone calls through the watch (technically, the call is happening through your smartphone). It#39;s certainly an improvement over the Sony SmartWatch I reviewed a year and a half ago. But it has some serious drawbacks. For one, it costs 0, and that doesn#39;t include the pricey smartphone you#39;ll need to tote along with it. Also, it only works with Samsung smartphones, like the Note 3, which I tested it with. Note 3。Having to charge a wristwatch once a day or every other day might not thrill some people. Lastly, there are some limitations to what this watch will actually show on its display. I#39;ll be superficial and talk appearances first. There#39;s no way around it: The Galaxy Gear looks like a geek watch. It has a textured rubber band, a thick, adjustable metal clasp and visible screws around the face of the watch. The 1.6-inch touch screen is pretty sleek-looking. There is a lone button on the right-hand side of the watch that takes you back to the home screen, which displays the time and date. Possibly the geekiest part is the round eye of a camera on the band. This is, presumably, so you can talk to fellow spies through the watch and then stealthily take photos of an unsuspecting subject. How the Gear fits will depend on the size of your wrist. I was a #39;tweener#39; -- one setting was too tight and the next was a little bit loose. It weighs 2.6 ounces and comes with four gigabytes of internal storage. 4G。The Gear watch comes with a charging cradle, a small, square-shaped plastic nest. But this charging cradle serves another purpose: It#39;s part of the Gear setup. I had to tap the Note 3 against the back of the cradle to install the Galaxy Gear manager app on the smartphone. This app is where I would manage all of the Gear settings and apps. The next step of the setup involved wirelessly connecting the watch, via Bluetooth, to the smartphone. This was pretty straightforward. However, whenever I wandered more than 30 feet or so away from the Note 3, the Gear watch on my wrist would disconnect from the smartphone. I could still see the time on the watch, but some apps wouldn#39;t work without a connection to the smartphone. Setting up those apps can be confusing. The watch comes with a few preinstalled, like the pedometer and a weather app. And there are Android-based apps on the smartphone, like Gmail, that you can opt in for notifications on the watch. Then there are other Samsung-branded apps -- like S Health, Samsung#39;s proprietary fitness-tracking app, which I used with the watch#39;s pedometer -- that require a Samsung login and password. Finally, there are Gear-specific apps, such as FB Quickview and Tweet Quickview, that aren#39;t the #39;real#39; Facebook and Twitter apps, but allow you to get social-network notifications on the watch. Swiping through the watch felt somewhat intuitive. From the home screen, swiping from side to side will take you through the key apps of the watch. Once you#39;re in an app, swiping down will bring you back to the previous screen. On some occasions, I found the Gear watch useful. I was out bike riding when a Google Calendar appointment popped up on the screen, reminding me I needed to be home in 10 minutes to accept a scheduled package delivery. If the watch buzzed or beeped while I was driving, I could look down and see I had new messages. I couldn#39;t Gmail content on the watch; the watch told me to it on my mobile device. I also couldn#39;t see pictures friends sent me via text message. And when I tried responding using S Voice, Samsung#39;s voice-recognition app, it was super-slow to recognize my commands. Taking photos with the watch was admittedly fun. You access the camera by swiping down from the home screen and snap a photo with a quick tap on the screen. But you can#39;t share these from the watch. You have to send them to the smartphone first. It#39;s almost impossible to talk about a smartwatch as a two-way communicator without mentioning Dick Tracy, but the Gear is just that. I called my boss and he said the call quality was good on his end, too. I called my mom and told her I was calling her from a watch and she laughed. The call quality was good because you#39;re basically using the watch as a Bluetooth speaker. You can dial a number or call up a contact from the watch as long as the smartphone is nearby. Samsung says the battery life of the Gear watch should be about the same as your average smartphone. In my experience, it lasted close to two days. And when I put it in its cradle to rest and recharge, I didn#39;t exactly miss it. /201311/264634Regulations proposed by the Chinese government for the country#39;s burgeoning smartphone market, aly the largest in the world, are prompting concern from industry groups representing companies such as Apple Inc. and Google Inc.中国政府针对本国迅速成长且已居世界第一的智能手机市场拟议的监管法规引起代表苹果(Apple Inc.)、谷歌(Google Inc.)等公司的行业团体的担忧。The draft law, for which the public-comment period ends this weekend, is the beginning of China#39;s effort to regulate the fast-growing mobile-applications market and could force industry leaders to censor what applications they offer, build phones with China-mandated security requirements and include features that would help the government identify users.《关于加强移动智能终端进网管理的通知》(征求意见稿)公开征求意见的时间即将于本周末结束。 China#39;s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology says the proposed rules are designed to protect the personal information of smartphone users. Chinese media have reported that the regulation would target malicious software─common on cheap, unbranded smartphones in China-that can steal users#39; personal information and incur charges by sending text messages. Industry groups say the effect on companies would likely be higher costs and slower growth in one of the most important markets for electronics suppliers. Apple sold two million smartphones in China in the first quarter, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. sold 7.8 million and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. sold 1.5 million, according to Analysys International. The size of China#39;s total smartphone market has more than tripled in less than three years, with 31.2 million smartphone devices sold in the first quarter, compared with just 7.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, Analysys says. The rapid adoption of new mobile devices and applications by Chinese consumers has outpaced authorities#39; ability to regulate them. China#39;s mobile-apps market currently is largely unregulated. The proposed measures mandate that handset makers ensure that preloaded apps and those made available through other means meet with Chinese laws in order to be licensed to sell the phones in China. That could mean companies would be forced to remove applications deemed offensive or antigovernment by China from devices and app stores offered on phones. The proposed law also says new phones must be made in accordance with Chinese standards. If new standards put forth by the government-guided China Communications Standards Association are approved, the law could force handset makers to cooperate with China#39;s government to identify customers and track their app use. /201206/188675

WhatsApp and Candy Crush recently joined the big leagues of technology start-ups done good, prompting tech-shy investors to join the hunt for the digital giants of the future. Family offices, wealthy individuals and even some institutional investors have begun to sift through the swaths of up-and-coming technology ventures in the hope of spotting the next big thing. Christian Nagel, co-founder of Earlybird, a Berlin-based venture capital company, admits that European investors have in recent years suffered a “horrible experience” when committing capital to start-ups. “Venture capital as an asset class has not been in investors’ favour, and investment volumes have constantly come down,” he says. But he believes the high-risk, low-return dynamic that blighted early-stage investors is shifting. “We have had discussions with our investors about whether the venture capital model is broken, and we find that family offices are among those who have realised that something has changed,” he says. “There is less capital chasing more opportunities.”“我们就风险投资模式是否已经不适用与我们的投资者进行了讨论,结果发现,家族理财室等投资者意识到情况已发生变化,”他表示,“机会更多了,但追踪这些机会的资金变少了。”The recent flurry of young tech companies that have found success at an international level has spurred investor interest in digital start-ups, despite the fact that many investors were burnt not too long ago during the dotcom bubble. Just last month King Digital Entertainment, the developer behind the addictive online game Candy Crush Saga, filed for an initial public offering in the US with the hope of raising more than 0m. Sina Weibo, a Chinese messaging platform similar to Twitter, followed suit last week by announcing plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange with a potential valuation of up to bn. Social networking giant Facebook also recently surprised markets with its bn buyout of instant messaging application WhatsApp in what appeared to be one of Silicon Valley’s best-kept secrets. While the odds of spotting the next Facebook are very long, investing in the next Airbnb, the accommodation website, or Farfetch, the online fashion retailer, is more plausible, according to Stefano Guidotti, chief executive of U-Start, a matchmaker for start-ups that puts selected small businesses in touch with angel investors. He says: “Digital start-ups are disrupting industries from travel to accommodation to logistics – this is where you can really look for home runs in the investment space. “Models that are growing at an incredible pace have the chance to become a billion-dollar opportunity, and [they emerge] much more frequently than companies like Facebook or Twitter.”“正以令人难以置信的速度增长的模式,有机会成为价值数十亿美元的机遇,(它们的涌现)次数远远多于Facebook或Twitter这样的公司。”The one area that investors should steer clear of is the new breed of start-ups aiming to cash in on the buzz around alternative digital currencies such as Bitcoin, according to Matteo Rizzi, partner at SBT Venture Capital, the financial technology-focused firm. “This is potentially a very risky investment because the return could be very big, or you could lose all of your money,” he says. “It has such explosive potential because regulation could hit this sector very hard and kill it before it gets going.”“这可能是一种风险非常高的投资,因为回报率可能会非常高,但你也可能血本无归,”他表示,“它具有如此爆炸性的潜力,因为监管机构可能在这个行业站稳脚跟之前沉重打击并掐灭它。”Rising investor confidence in early-stage technology and digital businesses has been helped by the development of vibrant start-up hubs beyond the US. A cluster of businesses focusing on online marketing and data analytics has sprung up in Berlin, while London is home to a growing number of financial tech start-ups. Large entrepreneurial communities have similarly sprouted in Tel Aviv and pockets of eastern Europe and South America. Mr Nagel says: “In the past most start-ups were in Silicon Valley or New York and you had to spend millions just to start developing. Now we see businesses popping up everywhere as you can develop and test an app overnight with little money.” As a result, Earlybird recently launched a fund focused on early-stage businesses in Turkey, central and eastern Europe. It raised 0m from entrepreneurs, family offices and institutional investors including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Finance Corporation. (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development)和国际金融公司(International Finance Corporation)。Family offices founded by successful business people who made their fortunes decades ago have been among the first to realise that an exciting new generation of entrepreneurs has emerged, according to Mr Nagel. “This new breed of entrepreneur does not copy existing US business models, but creates something unique that can be expanded internationally,” he says. Mr Guidotti agrees, pointing out that many family offices are particularly keen to invest in sectors they aly have some experience of. Families with a background in the motor industry, for example, prefer to invest in start-ups in related technology, such as car-sharing or tracking devices. “They see the opportunity in something they can control and understand better than a hedge-fund product, which has not necessarily brought the results they expected,” Mr Guidotti says. Although investors are regaining confidence in the tech start-up scene, it is not fool proof. There is resounding consensus that roughly 15 to 20 per cent of even the most carefully selected businesses will fail. To keep business failures – and investor discontent – to a minimum, venture capitalists and groups such as U-Start seek recommendations from accelerators such as Berlin’s Startupbootcamp and academic incubators that provide facilities, office space and mentoring advice to early-stage entrepreneurs. Earlybird’s Mr Nadel adds that the main reason a business tends to fail is down to problems with the team dynamic. He says: “We have declined opportunities where the idea was great but the team was so-so. The team needs to be really willing to create something, not give up first time a cheque from Google comes around. This is not about quick money – if you sell the company or bring it public, the team should stay.” /201403/278021
