Presents 送礼eigner There is something I can never puzzle out! The other day a Chinese friend who has helped me a lot was celebrating his birthday and I asked him what he would like a birthday present. Do you know what he said? “No, no, no! Don’t give me anything. Don’t be polite!” Can you believe it? Chinese(Laughs) Actually, I can well believe it. It’s a slight misunderstanding because of difference in culture, and also because of faulty language. What he said was a word word translation from Chinese, but even if he had phrased his idea more idiomatically, you still would have misunderstood him. Chinese I don’t think he was actually refusing to accept a present from you. It was just his way of being “polite”, just as you would say “That’s very kind of you.” He didn’t mean to be rude and certainly he didn’t mean to offend you. And what was I supposed to do or say in such a situation? Chinese You just insist, and if your friend is an elderly gentleman, you probably have to insist several times, but even then I doubt if he will ever give you a direct answer. By the way, do you always ask people what they would like presents in the west? We might among very intimate friends, and also we sometimes ask children what they would like. Otherwise we just go by the standard items, such as ties or tie-pins men, pipes or lighters smokers, household s housewives and toys children. And if we are invited to dinner, we usually take a bottle of table wine with us or some flowers the hostess. Chinese We also have our standard items. Chinese tonics such as ginseng or swallow nest are most suitable gifts elderly people. Chinese spirits and Chinese tea-leaves can also be regarded as standard items, and now with modern people instant coffee is taking the place of Chinese tea. birthdays and weddings, cash wrapped in red paper is the standard gift. Chinese Ready cash as a m of gift has its advantages. the donor, it saves you from racking your brains thinking of something suitable, and especially the newly-weds, a large sum of money really helps to start a new home. I’ve never thought of it that way. There is another thing that puzzled me. The other day another Chinese friend gave me a present. When I unwrapped it and thanked him and praised the gift, he went all red in the face, apparently very disgruntled. Chinese (Laughs) That’s another point where we differ. We don’t usually unwrap or comment on a present in the presence of the donor. Your friend felt very embarrassed probably because it was only a small gift so no wonder he felt very uncomtable when you thanked him and praised the gift. I certainly did not mean to offend him. It’s our custom to unwrap a present in the donor’s presence. A gift, however small, represents the donor’s good will, and it is only appropriate that you should show your appreciation. Touch Me is a soliloquy composed by Hank Miller, about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. also known as “The Wall”. This monument is one of the most visited sites in the city of Washington.-----By Hank Miller (Calinia professional photographer, freelance writer, mer Naval Aviator, and a Vietnam veteran) Touch me. Don’t be afraid. I can’t hurt you. Go ahead and touch my smooth surface. Feel the cold, glass-like smoothness and the crevices and lines that make me what I am. Use both hands if you wish. We are more similar than you dare to believe. Touch my face. Yes, I have a face like yours. It has weathered the centuries as yours has the years. My face portrays my evolution. Yours, the birth and death of a generation. My face has aged like yours as we have endured together the testimony of earth elements. I have eyes like yours. My inscriptions stare out at you as I search the meaning of why we are here. I look into your eyes and see who you are. Who am I? I was med millions of years past and now you see the results of my evolution. I can feel your hands and the sweat from your palms flow into the countless combination of the letters that make me. I know you. I have known you since I was able to breathe in the air as my smoothness began to take shape and my color matured along with natural flaws. You have known me since the days when you came to take me from my mother. You cannot hear me. I am static and unmoving. But, I can hear your murmurs and your cries of pain and sadness. Your sons and daughters ask why? There are no answers. I am very old. I have seen everything and I am none the wiser the pain and suffering and I have witnessed since I rose from the bowels of the earth. I have witnessed the conflict, the death, the civilizations, and the societies that have come bee you. Yet I remain mystified about this day. I feel sad yet alive with a purpose. I have come to know those who are now an integral part of the reason my being here at this place and time. That purpose has become apparent as I stand bee you on this day while your brethren gather to witness my reflections and the changes of light that mirror your soul. I am a reflection of you… I am all of you… I am your spirit.. I am The Wall. That’s really something.(真了不起)1. Are you sure?(你确信吗?)1. Are you crazy?(你疯了吗?7.
